Analytical Reasoning
Structured reasoning with conditions and constraints
Analytical reasoning solves a problem by translating its conditions into a structured model and finding the possibilities that satisfy all conditions together. In aptitude exams, the model may be an order, family tree, floor plan, color assignment, coordinate diagram, equation system or data-sufficiency test. The best approach is to record every constraint, apply the strongest ones first, keep valid cases separate and verify the final answer against the original wording.
Key formulas and rules
7 rulesConstraint Satisfaction System: , satisfying all conditions simultaneously
Cartesian Distance Formula:
Linear Equation System: has a unique solution
Contrapositive Logical Equivalence: ; note that and are formal fallacies
Pigeonhole Principle: If items are put into containers, then at least one container must contain items
Data Sufficiency Determination: Set of conditions determines variable
